This post is part of the General "Understanding SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy)" series of posts. Therefore, to understand the full concept, we will break it down into parts. This part will discuss the cause and symptoms.

​Briefly, this is caused by the mutation of a gene, disrupting motor neurons. This mutation essentially blocks neuron signals, to help with muscle movement. 

Symptoms includes: 
  • Muscle Weakness; 
  • Spinal Curvatures; 
  • Fatigue (Lethargy); 
  • Breathing Problems;
  • Limited Mobility;
  • Problems eating/swallowing;
  • Active muscles begin to slow down; and
  • Muscle Pain.
