​Resistance training is critical in meeting the demands muscle and anaerobic fitness needs and helps increase muscle mass and metabolic rates, through excess post oxygen consumption.

​That is another way of saying that even after you finish your workout, your body requires O2 for recovery and expends energy doing so. Ultimately high intensity, long duration, and circuits resistance training provides great excess post-exercise consumption levels and more fat utilization.
