Rapid-acting insulin limits increases in blood sugar levels, during the time of your meal. It takes about fifteen minutes to react, where the peak is between half and hour to an hour and a half. Also, it effects can go up one to five hours. The practice is to take it before a meal. Short acting or neutral insulin is still taken before meals to cover insulin needs. The insulin will usually reach the bloodstream within thirty minutes and will peak after two to three hours. It can stay up to three to six hours.
