Quick Health Tip – Not All Calories Are Created Equal: The Quality of Food

All calories are not created equal. Trust us, although it is sometimes easier to say, “a calorie is a calorie by any other name”, the consumption of said calorie can make a difference. Consumption here is the key. So, let us assume, in a plain vanilla example, you have a grain bowl of quinoa, avocado, and chicken. Let us say the bowl comes out to be 500 calories. Now for fun, let us say you love a snickers bar. And you have two snickers that amount to 500 calories. Technically, yes, if you were to eat nothing else, and expend the same number of calories, you then in essence are at par. But the difference here, which is a big one, the grain bowl of quinoa, avocado, and chicken is so highly dense in nutrients that your body will take longer to digest, making you satiated for longer periods in time. A snicker is so simple in terms of digestion, that you are bound to get hungry earlier. And you will eat more. Now, you are no longer comparing the grain bow to the two snickers. You must now compare the grain bowl vs the two snickers and whatever else you ate to help satiate the hunger.
